Rafiq Omair (He/Him)
Zenith Fellow Mentee, Class of 2025
University of Toronto, Mechanical Engineering
Mentor: Gavin Tolometti
Rafiq Omair is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Toronto (UofT) with a deep passion for research and innovation. His research interests lie in engineering design, materials science, additive manufacturing and more!
His drive led him to the Durable Repellent Engineering Advanced Materials (DREAM) Laboratory, where he works under Professor Kevin Golovin. Rafiq's research focuses on developing energy-efficient de-icing systems for aircraft, wind turbines, and infrastructure vulnerable to ice buildup. His expertise extends to superhydrophobic coatings that repel water and reduce ice adhesion, offering practical solutions for industries reliant on cold-weather performance.
Beyond his technical contributions, Rafiq is a strong advocate for undergraduate research. He co-chaired Undergraduate Engineering Research Day, which featured over 150 student presentations, providing a platform for emerging engineers to showcase their work. He has held numerous other extracurricular roles that have allowed him to serve the engineering community at UofT and across Ontario.
After his undergraduate degree, Rafiq is hoping to pursue graduate school and a career in research and academia. He has always had a love for mentorship and teaching which he hopes to incorporate into his career moving forward.
