Orrin Dahanaggamaarachchi is a second-year Engineering Science student at the University of Toronto, majoring in Aerospace with a dual minor in Robotics and Business. Growing up in Toronto, Ontario, he has always been passionate about using technology to drive positive change.

His first experience with aerospace was with the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Program. Orrin immersed himself in both aviation and astronautics, while teaching youth in his community about the importance of leadership and citizenship. Learning from retired pilots and RCAF members allowed him to gain a new perspective on Canada’s contributions at an international level.

Following his cadet retirement, Orrin’s innate interest in space led him to join the Space Systems Division of the University of Toronto Aerospace Team. It was here that he first learned about Earth Science missions – specifically, how space technology could be used to improve life on Earth. As a project lead, Orrin led the development of Thermal Simulations and Thermal Vacuum Testing Plans for FINCH, a hyperspectral imaging CubeSat. In the process, he found that the interdisciplinary nature of space deeply resonated with him. Passionate about learning more, he joined the Operations and Mentorship Teams to gain a systems-level understanding of how satellites operated and how he could support future space engineers.

Outside of academics, Orrin is involved in multiple extracurricular and volunteer initiatives. As an Engineering Science Ambassador, he educates high school students about engineering pathways and his personal experience as a student engineer. He actively enjoys playing volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and various board games – chess being chief among these. Orrin has previously worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor, teaching water safety to infants, children, and adults. His continuous involvement in high school and university garnered him the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

After earning his Bachelor’s Degree, Orrin aims to pursue graduate studies focused on small satellite design and operations. He hopes that his education, skillset, and professional experience will allow him to drive impactful missions and create more opportunities for public involvement in space.

Orrin is thrilled to join Sinclair Interplanetary this summer as a Zenith Fellow! He is excited to make meaningful contributions and learn more about spacecraft dynamics and control.
