Lewis Mackay (he/him)

Zenith Fellow Mentee, Class of 2023
McGill University, Bachelor of Physics
Mentor:
Parshati Patel

Lewis is a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Science, Major in Physics from McGill University, and will be pursuing graduate studies in Aerospace Engineering in 2024, also at McGill.

Throughout his undergraduate degree, he worked on several research projects that furthered his understanding of the Universe on the largest of scales. He studied Type Ia supernovae, the potential emergence of life in Europa’s subsurface ocean, and how Martian dust storms affect climate variability, all of which captured his interest in the search for habitable worlds and space colonization.

Lewis is a member of the McGill Rocket Team, a student-led engineering design team that manufactures and launches sounding rockets every year at amateur rocketry competitions. He is a part of the propulsion subteam and is currently tasked with the design and testing of the injector of their hybrid engine, which atomizes the flow of liquid oxidizer (nitrous) into the combustion chamber. His work with the team has solidified a passion for propulsion systems and interstellar travel.

During his undergraduate degree, Lewis was a Scientific Educator at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium where he shared his love for astronomy and cosmology with tens of thousands of visitors. Currently, Lewis is working as a Data Scientist for an educational technology company based in Toronto, taking advantage of remote work to travel the world.

Outside of academia and work, Lewis loves to write epic-fantasy novels and hopes to one day become a published author. When Lewis is not thinking about the stars or writing his books, you can often find him on the soccer field with a ball at his feet.

Lewis is beyond thrilled to have been selected as a Zenith Fellow Mentee and can't wait to see what the summer will bring.
