Kevin Deng (He/Him)
Zenith Fellow Intern, Class of 2025
University of Waterloo, Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
Host Organization: Rocket Lab
Mentor: Patrick Kappel
In Kevin's younger years, he came across a sketch of the iconic space shuttle rising into the sky from its launch pad. Although he did not understand what he saw at the time, he was fascinated by it. That drawing would nurture a lasting passion to explore the vast world beyond our pale blue dot.
In pursuit of this goal, Kevin is currently in his third year of mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo. As the team and mechanical lead of the UW Orbital team, he helps organize a group of more than 50 students to design, manufacture, and test a 3U CubeSat for Earth imaging applications. In this role, he worked on the mechanical design and thermal analysis of the satellite structure and hosted outreach events to inspire others to pursue STEM fields. Beyond the team, Kevin is also helping with research involving a novel physics phenomenon that could improve future space missions.
Kevin spends most of his free time reading a mix of sci-fi, fantasy and non-fiction books. He also enjoys listening to a variety of music and sometimes experiments with composing and producing songs himself.
In the future, Kevin hopes to dive further into the field of space exploration and make contributions that will advance collective human knowledge. He's incredibly excited to take the first step of that journey and join Sinclair Interplanetary by Rocket Lab this summer as part of the Zenith Canada Pathways Fellowship!
