Jake Birkness (He/Him)
Zenith Fellow Intern, Class of 2025
Carleton University, Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering: Space Systems Design
Host Organization: Star Spec
Mentor: Seve Savoieterue
Jake has always had a deep-rooted sense of adventure. His desire to contribute to human exploration of space pushed him to move to Ottawa, Ontario, to study Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University. Now a fourth-year space systems design student, Jake is making that dream a reality.
Jake’s interest in space reached a fever after reading Chris Hadfield’s An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. He has carried this interest through his internship and extracurricular experience. At Carleton, Jake is the Co-Lead of the Rocket-Propelled Wind Tunnel Capstone project, where he manages team members and performs structural analysis on the balloon-based launch platform. Jake is also the Event Director and former VP External of the Carleton Mechanical and Aerospace Society, where he organizes networking and social events. He enjoys contributing to leadership and wellbeing at Carleton, as well as stimulating student interest in space exploration.
For 15 months in 2023/2024, Jake was an Opto-Mechanical Engineering Intern at MPB Communications in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. In this role, Jake contributed to the design of Optical Space Amplifiers, including support for the modelling, manufacturing, and testing of the units. Jake developed a system for mechanical qualification of space components. This experience has given Jake a passion for the spacecraft testing process.
Jake also has a great love of folk and rock music. At MPBC, Jake played guitar, sang, and performed with the company band. He also writes and records his own songs, and occasionally performs at open mics in Ottawa and Toronto.
This summer, Jake will be joining StarSpec Technologies in Cambridge, Ontario as a Space Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) Intern. He is extremely excited to begin this role and learn from the incredible team at StarSpec!
